Slinky Manipulation 101: The World’s Newest Flow Art
Come learn how to turn a regular ol’ rainbow slinky into a mesmerizing, magical energy beam that will keep you entertained all night long (and beyond)!
What is slinky manipulation, you ask? Slinky manipulation is the art of using one's hands to send waves of tension through a slinky, allowing one to trace patterns through the air, and often creating the illusion of defying gravity. It originated in China in the early 2010s, and has been popularized in several viral videos.
In this workshop, participants will first witness a demonstration of slinky manipulation and learn a brief history of the slinky, from its discovery by a Naval engineer in the 1940s, to its modern use as a skill toy.
Participants will then learn to turn their slinky into an energy beam that bounces from hand to hand, use their hands to create a slinky "escalator", learn to make their slinky bounce off a target and back into their hand, and leave armed with everything they need to practice to become a slinky master! Blacklight-reactive rainbow slinkies will be provided for all participants, and will be available for purchase at the conclusion of the workshop.
Recommended for ages 7 to 107, although younger children are welcome (preferably with adult assistance).
Length: 60 minutes, but can be adapted to 45-90 minutes.
